Greenwoodâs Heavy Trash Pickup Starts Tomorrow
Heavy trash pickup starts tomorrow for Greenwood residents! Items like furniture, carpeting (max 4x4), and bundled metal appliances (without freon) are eligible. Be sure to have your items curbside by 7 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day, which runs from October 21 to 25.
Franklin College Educators Honored with PALSave Open Educator Award
Franklin College educators Andrea Mescall and Arbin Thapaliya received the 2023-24 PALSave Open Educator Award for using Open Educational Resources (OER) to reduce textbook costs and improve student access. Mescall focuses on creating an inclusive learning environment, while Thapaliya, a two-time recipient, has published his own open textbook. Only nine faculty members across Indiana were honored with this award.
Aspire Johnson County Launches Successful Teacher Externship Program
Aspire Johnson County successfully launched its Teacher Externship Program, inviting local middle and high school educators to participate in two sessions. The first session, led by Aspire's School to Work Specialist Jennifer Hollingshead, concluded last week, with the second set for October 16-18. Funded by a grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, the program connects educators with local businesses to enhance learning opportunities. Hollingshead is eager to continue the program in 2025 and encourages interested employers and teachers to get involved.

Duke Energy Foundation Grants $215,000 to Boost Indiana Emergency Response Efforts
The Duke Energy Foundation has provided $215,000 in grants to support first responders and emergency management agencies across Indiana, helping improve their response to severe weather and emergencies through better planning, equipment, and training. Johnson County received $4,000 to distribute emergency preparedness pamphlets, while New Whiteland was awarded $3,282 for a fire ballistic vest to protect firefighters during high-risk situations, such as active shooter incidents. These grants aim to strengthen emergency response and reduce disaster vulnerabilities, especially in smaller communities.

Bargersville Redevelopment Commission
The Redevelopment Commission will be diving into several key topics at their October 22 meeting at 830am. Highlights include reviewing the Economic Development Area (EDA) plan and discussing a series of Special Projects General Obligation Bonds to fund local public improvements. Additionally, the commission will consider contracts for professional services related to downtown development and Baldwin Street drainage improvements. Thereâs also a proposal for a new partnership to boost branding and marketing efforts along the I-69 corridor. The Umbarger Plaza Project and updates on State Road 135/144 mixed-use developments will be discussed too. Be sure to attend or tune in for the latest on these exciting local projects!
